How to Properly Identify and Measure a Spring for Your Door

Here is the information we will need to help you fix your broken spring. All of this information is important – we need the spring size to within a sixteenth of an inch! Always view the pictures as from the inside of the garage looking out.

First, select whether you have torsion or extension springs on your garage door:

If you have a torsion (“windup”) type spring, select its placement:

For either type of spring, we need to know the inside diameter, the length of 10 coils, and the overall length of the broken (unwound) spring:

Inside diameter of the spring Select Inside Diameter :

1 19/32      1 ¾      2      2 ¼     

Enter length of 10 coils within 1/16th inch :



Length of 10 Coils

Enter Overall Length of broken (unwound) spring (within 1/2 inch):
( Note: Never measure the wound spring as it will be longer)
